Pathways to Excellence: Achieving CSP Certification Through Effective Safety and Health Training

Since 1969, the Board of Certified Safety Professionals (BCSP), a nonprofit organization based in Indianapolis, Indiana, has been establishing and certifying technical competency standards for safety, health, and environmental (SH&E) practitioners. The BCSP ensures that SH&E professionals meet rigorous qualifications to maintain workplace safety and environmental health. With a long-standing commitment to excellence, BCSP’s certifications are recognized and respected across various industries. Headquartered in Indianapolis, BCSP continues to lead the field in SH&E certification and standards.

The Certified Safety Professional Certification

The Certified Safety Professional (CSP) is among several other certifications offered by the BCSP and is recognized as the gold standard in the safety, health, and environmental industry. To qualify for the CSP exam, candidates must meet specific prerequisites, including holding a minimum of a bachelor’s degree and having four years of safety experience where safety responsibilities constitute at least 50% of their duties at a professional level. Additionally, candidates must possess a BCSP Qualified Credential, such as the Associate Safety Professional (ASP), Graduate Safety Practitioner (GSP), Transitional Safety Practitioner (TSP), or Certified Industrial Hygienist® (CIH).

There are other qualifying criteria available for students that reside outside of the U.S. that can be used as the qualifying criteria to be eligible to sit for the CSP examination. See below.

The associate degree must include at least four courses totaling 12 semester hours or 18 quarter hours in subjects covered by the ASP examination blueprint. Additionally, applicants must have one year of professional safety experience, with safety responsibilities making up at least 50% of their duties. Finally, candidates must pass the ASP examination.

Graduate Safety Practitioner

Institutions like Columbia Southern University which is a Regionally Accredited School offers online bachelor’s and master’s degrees in safety and health, which can qualify students to sit for the CSP exam through the Graduate Safety Practitioner (GSP) path. This allows students to bypass the Associate Safety Professional (ASP) exam. By completing these accredited programs, students meet the educational requirements for the CSP certification. Columbia Southern University’s degrees provide a direct route to achieving this prestigious certification.
