Introduction

Welcome to the Hazard Communication course, designed to provide you with the knowledge and skills to safely work with hazardous chemicals in the workplace. Did you know that according to the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), over 32 million workers in the United States are potentially exposed to hazardous chemicals in the workplace? These chemicals can cause a wide range of health effects, from mild irritation to serious illnesses such as cancer, and can also pose significant fire, explosion, and other physical hazards. Therefore, it is essential that employers and employees understand the potential hazards of these chemicals and take necessary precautions to prevent injuries and illnesses. In this course, we will cover the requirements of the Hazard Communication Standard, including hazard classification, labeling, Safety Data Sheets (SDSs), and employee training. By the end of this course, you will have a solid understanding of how to identify and manage chemical hazards in the workplace, helping to keep yourself and your coworkers safe.

Course Description

Hazard communication is a critical course that focuses on providing learners with essential knowledge and skills to ensure that they can effectively communicate the potential dangers associated with chemicals and other hazardous materials in the workplace. This course covers the fundamental principles of hazard communication, including the identification, labeling, and communication of hazardous chemicals.

The course covers the various aspects of the Globally Harmonized System (GHS) of Classification and Labeling of Chemicals, including hazard identification, classification criteria, and the development of Safety Data Sheets (SDSs). The learners will also gain knowledge on the types of hazards associated with different chemicals, such as physical, health, and environmental hazards, and how to control and mitigate them.

Through knowledge check questions, scenarios, and study material, the course emphasizes the importance of proper labeling and signage of hazardous materials, as well as the proper use of personal protective equipment (PPE) when handling hazardous chemicals. Additionally, the course provides learners with strategies for communicating hazardous material risks to workers, emergency responders, and other stakeholders.

Overall, this course is ideal for anyone working in an industry that involves hazardous materials and wants to ensure the safety and well-being of their workers, community, and environment.

Objectives

At the end of the Hazard Communication course participants such be able to:

  • Explain the purpose and scope of the Hazard Communication Standard.
  • Identify the physical and health hazards associated with hazardous materials in the workplace.
  • Describe the labeling requirements for hazardous materials, including signal words, pictograms, and hazard statements.
  • Identify the information that must be included on Safety Data Sheets (SDS) and how to access and interpret them.
  • Explain the importance of exposure control measures, including personal protective equipment (PPE) and engineering controls.
  • Describe the training requirements for employees who work with hazardous materials.
  • Identify safe handling practices for hazardous materials, including storage and disposal.
  • Explain emergency procedures and spill response protocols.
  • Describe the process for conducting a hazard assessment and program review.
  • Evaluate the effectiveness of the Hazard Communication Program and identify areas for improvement.

These objectives are intended to provide a foundation of knowledge and skills for workers who handle hazardous materials. By achieving these objectives, workers can help to ensure that hazardous materials are properly labeled, stored, handled, and disposed of in a safe and effective manner.
