Introduction

The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) identifies the “Focus Four” hazards as the most common and deadly threats to workers in the construction industry. These hazards—fall hazards, caught-in or -between hazards, struck-by hazards, and electrocution hazards—are responsible for the-majority of serious injuries and fatalities on construction sites. Understanding and mitigating these risks are critical for ensuring the safety of workers and complying with OSHA regulations.

Fall hazards, often arising from working at heights without proper fall protection, are the leading cause of fatalities in construction. Caught-in and -between hazards involve workers being crushed by machinery, collapsing structures, or becoming trapped in tight spaces. Struck-by hazards occur when workers are hit by falling objects, vehicles, or equipment. Electrocution hazards are present when workers come-into contact with live electrical wires or equipment. By addressing these Focus Four hazards, employers can significantly reduce the likelihood of severe accidents, protect their workforce, and create a safer working environment.

Course Description

This OSHA Focus Four Hazards course is designed to provide comprehensive training on the four primary types of hazards that commonly cause injuries and fatalities in construction: falls, electrocution, struck-by, and caught-in/between. Participants will gain in-depth knowledge of these hazards, including how to identify, assess, and control them to ensure a safer work environment. The course covers relevant OSHA regulations and standards, equipping participants with the skills to conduct effective hazard inspections and implement appropriate safety measures. Through practical examples and interactive learning, participants will also learn how to mitigate these hazards and be able to promote a culture of safety within their organization.

Course Objectives

At the end of the training participants should be able to:

  • Identify and define the four primary types of hazards recognized by OSHA—falls, electrical, struck-by, and caught-in/between hazards—in various workplace environments.
  • Assess the risk levels associated with the Focus Four hazards and evaluate how these risks can impact worker safety and health.
  • Implement appropriate safety controls and preventive measures to mitigate the risks associated with each of the Focus Four hazards.
  • Understand and interpret OSHA regulations and standards related to the Focus Four hazards, ensuring compliance with legal safety requirements.
  • Conduct effective hazard inspections and risk assessments to identify potential Focus Four hazards in their workplace and recommend corrective actions.
  • Develop and implement emergency response plans tailored to incidents involving Focus Four hazards.
  • Promote a culture of safety within their organization by educating peers and subordinates about the Focus Four hazards and encouraging proactive safety practices.
